John Charles Hutton, a beloved figure in Newfoundland and Labrador's music and business scenes, passed away on May 15, leaving behind a rich legacy of creativity, entrepreneurship, and community engagement. His life, marked by a deep passion for music and a commitment to mentoring others, serves as a testament to the power of artistic expression and the impact of a life well-lived.
Hutton's journey began in the historic Charles Hutton & Son music store, where his musical talents blossomed. He became a central figure in the local music scene, playing with bands like 12 Gauge, Foxy, and Billy and the Bruisers, a group he led as a guitarist and singer for over 36 years. His musical prowess and entrepreneurial spirit led him to take ownership of the family business, further solidifying his place in the industry.
In 1983, Hutton made a bold move to Toronto, aiming for international rock stardom. While this dream remained unfulfilled, it opened doors to artist management and representation, including his work with The Agency. He humorously reflected on this phase of his life, noting the irony of his career path, as he joked, 'Karma is a bitch.'
Upon his return to St. John's in 1988, Hutton revitalized the family music store, earning the prestigious P.G. Gardiner Institute’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 1989. His entrepreneurial spirit continued as he ventured into event promotion, real estate, and other business endeavors. One of his most forward-thinking moves was launching Canada's first commercial MP3 music download service, showcasing his innovative approach to the industry.
Hutton's contributions extended far beyond the business realm. He was a dedicated advocate for Newfoundland and Labrador's music industry, serving as a charter member of MusicNL and serving two terms as President. His commitment to the industry was further demonstrated through his two terms on the board of the East Coast Music Association and his service as a member of the National Film Board of Canada Board of Trustees. His mentorship and support for countless individuals across music, entertainment, and business were invaluable.
Hutton's impact was also felt through his volunteer work, raising over $5 million for the Canadian Red Cross through benefit concerts and music fundraising initiatives. His generosity of spirit and positive outlook touched many lives, often quietly and without expectation of recognition.
Hutton's greatest joy, however, was the life he shared with his devoted wife, Caron Hawco. Their love, laughter, friendship, and adventures were the center of his world. His absence will be deeply felt, and his memory will be cherished by those who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held on Sunday, May 24th, at 8 pm at the Jag Soundhouse. Proceeds from the event will support the creation of 'The John Hutton Instrument Collection for Young Musicians' within The Katie Sullivan Instrument Library, ensuring his legacy continues to inspire future generations.
